This project focuses on bipolar disorder as one of the leading mental health issues in the United States. I chose the condition due to increasing public health burden that puts pressure on individuals, families, and communities. In this case, bipolar disorder reinforces the need for proactive leadership, collaboration and communication, and adherence to practice standards. My focus is on improving the quality, safety, and cost of patient care by encouraging individuals to practice self-management. Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (2023) estimated the number of those with bipolar disorder at 5.7 million. The condition is also among the leading causes of disability and suicides, hence the need for self-care practices to safeguard individuals against heightened moods, energy, and distorted thinking.
Self-care practices empower patients to take care of their health and well-being. I will focus more on encouraging patients to utilize non-pharmacological measures that help improve quality of relationships, work, and other activities. I also encourage individuals to utilize accessible and available health resources including social support, primary care providers and specialists intended to guide them through self-management goals. Specifically, I aim to initiate health promotion and education on self-care practices intended to help patients make informed decisions for monitoring mood, maintaining quality sleeping routine, and managing stress.
Bipolar disorder makes life challenges for patients due to the adverse impacts on productivity and social relations. Patients are vulnerable to recurrent episodes that increase cost of medications and therapies (Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, 2023). For this reason, I identified self-management as a viable and sustainable intervention for patients to take charge of their health and well-being. Discussing self-care practices empowers patients to overcome the risk of under-diagnosis or misdiagnosis. Patients embrace positive behaviors and attitudes vital for reducing the risk of delayed or postponed care (Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, 2023). I will explain the negative impacts of bipolar disorder on job-related activities, interpersonal relations, and economic wellness for patients to appreciate calls for consistent self-management. The identified activities include, journaling, yoga sessions, exercise, substance use cessation, and being part of a supportive social network. Taking medications as recommended and maintaining quality sleeping patterns are also vital practices for improving health and quality of life.
Self-management safeguards patients against adverse social, economic, and health impacts. Bipolar disorder makes individuals vulnerable to substance abuse, suicide and suicidal intentions, financial problems, and damaged relations. Bonnin et al. (2019) addressed the need for individualized care plans that enhance achievement of stability and a fulfilling life. My focus is on low-income patients affected by a fragmented healthcare system. The group is vulnerable to low health literacy and limited access to health promotion and education. Since patients with bipolar disorder can spend between $4,500 and $21,000 per year, it becomes challenging for those from underserved and under-resourced communities to afford therapies and medications. Jelinek (2022) expressed concerns over a high number of patients lacking health insurance. This way, I consider self-management as an evidence-based approach for patients to overcome challenges associated with high costs of medications, inaccessible talk therapies, and expensive family-focused therapies. In other words, this intervention helps patients utilize cost-effective self-care practices, free and community-based clinics, and other resources that help prevent symptoms from escalating to severe levels.
The social, economic, and health challenges associated with bipolar disorder makes effective leadership an essential consideration for addressing patients’ needs. I consider servant leadership as vital for collaborating with patients, families, and communities to eliminate uncertainty, social disruption, and lost opportunities associated with the condition (Langhof & Güldenberg, 2020). The leader understands challenges in under-resourced communities and the need for evidence-based and cost-effective means of safeguarding patients against adverse impacts. As a servant leader, I will dedicate myself to collaborating with primary care providers and specialists to ensure seamless access to accurate and complete information on self-care practices.
Langhof and Güldenberg (2020) associated servant leadership with the ability to address structural aspects and health inequalities within communities. The authors also noted that servant leaders initiate holistic pathways for promoting effective and efficient treatment. In the end, there are opportunities to encourage collaborative efforts that encourage everyone to dedicate time and energy to scaling health promotion and education on bipolar disorder self-management. The leader also initiates interdisciplinary collaboration for flexibly access primary care providers and specialists. The goal is to encourage shared decision-making to increase commitment to designing and implementing self-management plans.
Excellent collaboration and communication promote efficient treatment for patients with bipolar disorder. I consider evidence-based guidelines, patient education, and shared decision-making as key to creating the best environment for optimizing care outcomes. Jones et al. (2023) addressed the need for proactive follow-up and information flow to encourage positive health-seeking behaviors and attitudes among patients living with bipolar disorder. My project encourages psychologists, behavioral health counselors, therapists, and psychiatrists to embrace openness, honesty, and transparent. The values promote non-discriminatory and fair services delivery guided by the desire to help patient overcome health disparities. Further, I understand the need for excellent relations with patients to reduce the risk of delayed or postponed care. This way, I will emphasize on individualized patient training and education, social support, and follow-ups to improve results.
